In early September of the 33rd year of Shunxi, the emperor passed away. The Rui Party purged the palace and the capital was under martial law for three days. The whole city was in mourning and rituals, music and marriage were prohibited. Three days later, the coffin was carried out of Dong'an Gate to the imperial mausoleum on Lingxiu Mountain. The new emperor ascended the throne and changed the reign to Cheng'an.
The succession to the throne of Shunxi Dynasty remained undecided, with undercurrents involving the rise and fall, honor and disgrace of countless aristocratic families. Until the death of the previous emperor, the protracted dispute between Renrui finally came to an end. When the dust settled, some were happy while others were sad.
The gates of the capital city were reopened, and it was still bustling and prosperous. To ordinary people, it was as if nothing had happened, except that the guarding and patrols were more stringent.
Half of the people at the Dongqing County Post Station were going to the capital. They stayed at the post station for three days. Naturally, they set out in groups and only said goodbye to each other when they were about to reach the capital.
The capital city is worthy of being the capital of the emperor. The eaves of the buildings all exude a majestic aura. Because the previous emperor passed away, the taverns and brothels were not allowed to open, but it was not deserted. The shops lined the streets, with tall flags of time-honored brands flying high. There were the four treasures of the study, gouache jewelry, silk and satin garments, tea shops and money shops, as well as a row of snack shops and food stalls on the street, all emitting steam and wafting fragrance everywhere.
