Today's lunch is stewed pork ribs with winter melon and barley, colorful shrimp fried rice, steamed fish and stir-fried green beans, and a bowl of ice cream as a dessert.

The spareribs in the soup are stewed until they are soft and boneless, the winter melon melts easily in a sip, and the barley is soft and glutinous.

The egg fried rice was yellow and black in patches, and the rice grains were sticky and clumped together. The shrimp and lean meat cubes were slightly burnt, but the peas inside were still crispy and obviously still some way from being cooked.

The fish was over-steamed and the tail was roasted over high heat until it had black edges. Fortunately, the fish was fresh and of high quality, so it still retained its tender and chewy texture.

The stir-fried green beans were stir-fried enough, but they were as dry as an old woman in her 70s or 80s, with no plump flesh left under the skin.
