The room was packed with people, not so crowded that there was nowhere to stand, but enough to make Owen Travis uncomfortable. He went up the stairs to the fifth floor, and the noisy sounds downstairs became distant.
The voice-activated light was as dim as a candle, and Owen Travis sat down on the stairs. The light was off, and he was too lazy to shout. He leaned his elbows on his knees, supported his lowered forehead with both hands, and was trapped in the darkness.

Owen Travis had just warmed up the cold steps and was hesitating whether to hide on the sixth floor. Before he could make a decision, the other party had already climbed up the stairs on the side of the handrail, taking three steps at a time.
