On the main street of Qionglin Town, at lunchtime, the aroma of various snacks along the way filled the air along with the shouts of the stall owners.
Everything Oliver saw was new: duck cooked with tea oil, pancakes made from elm seeds and flour, and restaurants with knife flags hanging on them.
Jaxon looked at Oliver without blinking, his hands full of snacks he had bought along the way. It was not until their young master stopped in front of a shabby stall selling fried insects and tried to stuff a grasshopper into his mouth that Jaxon's defense broke down.
"Master! Those are bugs, don't eat them blindly!"
The stall owner was a big man with a bit of a bad mouth. His stall was seldom visited by people, who usually fried the insects and ate them themselves. He didn't expect that the pretty young scholar in front of him was so brave, so he laughed loudly, and his laughter was quite shocking, but when he opened his mouth, his words were not very clear and he had a lisp.
"That one has cooled down and tastes bitter. Come and try my freshly cooked Artemia!"
Oliver smelled the fragrance and drank it without saying a word. Jaxon couldn't stop him.
After chewing it, the young man's eyes lit up, "Oh, this is delicious, uncle, I'll buy some."
The big man waved his hand, "It's not good for people to eat too much, just taste it."
Jaxon felt relieved when he heard this. He immediately took out a piece of red bean snack from the snack bag in his hand and stuffed it into the mouth of Oliver, who was still unwilling to give up. After much persuasion, he finally took the man away from the shabby stall.
Oliver felt quite comfortable as they talked and laughed all the way. Finally, he slowed down his pace and walked side by side with Jaxon, reaching out to take things together with Jaxon.
"I'll take it, Master. We've come so far. Are you tired?"
Oliver hasn't been out for a long time, but somehow he has gotten better recently. Not to mention his previous coughing up blood, he walked around most of the market today but didn't feel tired at all. He was even able to carry snacks with Jaxon.
"I'm fine, let's go a little further."
He was full and had a good time strolling around, but as he looked around along the way, he couldn't see where the Lord Dragon King mentioned by the little demons could be hiding.
"Going further, there will be no snacks. It will be a market selling raw meat. Master, let's not go there. It's full of blood."
Oliver shook his head and insisted on going. Jaxon had no choice but to follow him. He was really afraid that their young master would stuff some nonsense into his mouth again...
There were obviously fewer people coming and going in the meat market. The bulk buyers of meat were delivered directly to the door, and the rest were usually bought in small quantities at the market. It was already noon, and most of the good meat was sold out. There were only some bones and scraps left on each meat stall.
The stall owners were talking and laughing. As the master and servant walked in, they heard them laughing about a spotted dog that would pay "silver" to buy meat. Oliver thought this was strange. Could it be the Dragon King he was looking for? So he quickly pricked up his ears and listened carefully.
After the thunderstorm a few days ago, the raw meat business is booming.
In a remote alley beside the market, a large spotted dog limped out. It was hard to tell what breed it was. It was thin, but had a very long tail.
It was already very hungry and was salivating over the large bones on a distant stall, but it still did not steal the meat like an ordinary puppy would.
The big spotted dog watched the "people" coming and going in front of the meat stall. They took out a few "stones" and exchanged them for meat. After a while, the spotted dog turned his ears back and limped back to the alley.
Butcher Zhang had just delivered meat to the Su Mansion that day and came out to set up his stall at noon. The Su Mansion in the southeast of the city did not eat much meat, but the purchasing manager said that the young master had been in good health recently and liked to eat meat, so he ordered some good pork belly.
He returned to the stall, picked up the boning knife, and chopped the remaining pork leg bones, just enough to take home and make soup.
"Hey, Zhang the butcher, why don't you leave some meat for yourself? The bones are not oily."
Zhang the butcher removed the bones and flesh and waved his hand, "It doesn't matter what the taste is. Anyway, I'm a bachelor in my twenties. If I eat enough, my whole family will not be hungry."
Several stall owners also laughed.
Just as he was about to close his stall, Zhang the butcher saw a tall, skinny dog with a long tail standing at the entrance of the old alley. It looked at the market hesitantly, and finally limped towards the meat stall.
There are always puppies looking for food at the meat market, either stealing or begging, and the stall owners turn a blind eye and occasionally feed them some leftovers.
But the dog was too big and people didn't dare to approach it. When the spotted dog saw this, it also tucked its tail between its legs and didn't move forward.
It passed by several other meat stalls, but there was nothing it could do.
Finally, the dog limped to Zhang the butcher's stall and stopped.
If it were a puppy, a fist-sized piece of meat would be enough to fill it up, but a dog this big could probably only eat a dime of meat!
As Zhang the butcher was hesitating, he saw the big spotted dog lowering its body, folding its ears, and putting its mouth on the money box of the stall. It opened its mouth and gently put down a small stone, just like the butchers putting silver in it.
The stones must have been carefully selected. Some of them are whitish, like silver, and look very beautiful.
The man and the dog looked at each other for a while. When the dog was about to give up, Zhang the butcher smiled and simply gave all the bones and raw meat to the spotted dog.
"Okay, sir, the money and goods are settled!"
So the man and the dog did this business every day. The big yellow dog's injury healed and his leg was no longer lame.
Everyone teased Zhang the butcher, but they would also enthusiastically feed the puppies at their feet that were wagging their tails to ask for food.
After listening to this, Oliver shook his head. What he was looking for was something in the water, so it definitely wouldn't be a spotted dog. He might as well go to the fishmongering place and have a look. Maybe there might still be a chance.
But Oliver did not leave immediately. Instead, she went further into the street.
The young master thought, this big dog is not easy to raise, and the butcher also wants to make money, so it is better for him to take the dog home, so that he can always feed it. Now his yard is in need of a watchman, so wouldn't it be a win-win situation!
At the corner of the street, sure enough, a spotted dog half a man's height was lying beside a meat stall eating raw pork liver.
The stall owner was not at home, and the dog seemed to be helping to watch the stall. He would take a look at anyone who passed by, and people had to put down money before he could let them take the meat.
When Oliver went to the stall, Jaxon carefully protected him, fearing that the dog would bite Oliver.
As soon as the two men arrived at the stall, Zhang the butcher came back, shouting and selling meat.
But the spotted dog suddenly stopped eating the meat. It shrugged its nose, then suddenly raised its head and kept staring at Oliver.
Oliver also explained her purpose to Zhang Tu, but Zhang Tu waved his hand and said, "Sir, you have to ask the dog if it wants to go. It never goes with anyone. I feed it every day, but it only comes at mealtime."
Before Oliver could speak, Zhang Tu saw the sickly spotted dog looking at the handsome young man with bright eyes. It stopped eating the meat and circled around the young man several times.
Finally, this strange big dog obediently followed the young master.
Before leaving, the young man bought all the meat on his stall, gave him silver, and asked him to deliver the meat to his house.
"Where is your mansion?"
The young master replied, "Southeast of the city, Su Mansion."
It turned out to be an old customer. The person in front of him must be Young Master Su, with his bright eyes and white teeth.
Zhang Tu looked at the man and the spotted dog going away and sighed, "In this world, even dogs look at faces..."
Maybe she thinks he's ugly and won't follow him even if I give her meat.
The dog was very docile, except for the fact that it glanced cautiously at the big man when it passed by the fried insect stall.
Then, Oliver took his servant and the dog and checked all the fish stalls in the market. It was dark already, and they found nothing.
In the end, he had to go home and deal with the little demon in the flower pond.
After returning home, while the moon was dark and the wind was strong and everyone was sleeping, Oliver whispered instructions to the turtle and the giant salamander lying on the pool table.
But before the man and the two monsters could finish their conversation, the big spotted dog that had just arrived today walked out of its kennel and followed closely behind Oliver to protect him.
It wouldn't be a big deal if the dog came, Oliver thought as long as the dog wasn't afraid of the little monster. Unfortunately, the dog didn't react, and the flower bed exploded first!
"Ahhhh, this, this, is this Zouwu?"
"Is this yours, your Zouwu?"
"Your Excellency's Zouwu Guards!"
"Zouwu Guard! Zouwu Guard!"
Oliver was startled. He saw a bunch of bubbles tumbling out of the not very wide pond under the moonlight. A large group of various "aquatic" monsters, all with lotus leaves on their heads, popped up and talked.
"Zou Wu, where is the Lord?"
"Where is the master? Where is the master?"
The spotted dog was indifferent, and even sat on the ground, raised its hind legs, and tickled its neck.
"It's over. Zou Wu is also stupid."
"Foolish, stupid!"
Oliver didn't pay attention to what the little monsters were saying. When he suddenly saw so many monsters, he subconsciously took a step back, took a breath, and his fingers pointing at the pool trembled slightly.
"Why, why are there so many monsters in my house!"
The giant salamander stuttered and could not speak, and Wang Ba hurried to comfort Oliver, "These are all my Jinshui aquatic creatures, don't be afraid, sir. The running water in your flower pond was originally drawn from the tributary of Jinshui, so we can travel back and forth between the two places. It's General Zou Wu."
Wang Ba asked the spotted dog beside Oliver politely, "General Zou Wu, why are you like this? Where is the master? Have you found the master?"
The spotted dog looked at the pond of fish without any reaction, still looking like a dog.
Wang Ba sighed, sent all the little monsters into the pool, and explained to Oliver.
"Young Master, where did you meet General Zou Wu?"
Oliver was speechless for a moment as he looked at the large mottled dog at his feet.
"At the meat stall..."
General? The general in the water is a dog? Magic.
But Oliver comforted himself that there was already a monster in the pond, so he didn't care about having one more dog. Well, his yard was almost becoming a monster's den.
Wang Ba saw Oliver's confusion and said, "Zou Wu is our master's mount. It is a huge monster in human form. Its original form was also very majestic. But now it is like this..."
"I'm afraid he was injured by the Dragon Gate Qi while protecting his master."
The monsters were at a loss, and Oliver also found the situation a bit tricky.
He just wanted to help the little demon on a whim, but now, he seemed to be more deeply involved with these inhuman creatures.
But looking at the fish in the yard and the skinny big dog next to them, they are really far from the dangerous and terrifying monsters in the books.
Due to the new etiquette the little demons had learned, and because they were staying in someone else's yard after all, the tortoise called out all of its kind in the pond to greet the young master and introduced them one by one.
"This one is a green-headed fool, and this one is a green-headed fool."
"This is the monk three points, this is the monk three points."
"The gourd collapses, the gourd collapses, it falls with the wind, it falls with the wind..."
Oliver was speechless as he looked at the bunch of little creatures lying by the pool with their watery eyes, bending over to greet him.
He really couldn't tell the difference between the two prawns. Carp, grass carp, and crucian carp were all the same fish...
"It seems, it seems that they all look similar."
The giant salamander shook its head in shock, and its six little pink horns made crackling sounds.
"Bad, such a huge difference!"
So, on the bed at night, the young master lay in a daze in his bed. When he closed his eyes, all he saw were fish heads, each of which looked alike...
The spotted dog was guarding outside Oliver's house. Late at night, the sleeping young master felt a bright light on his chest, which was filled with a sudden golden glow.
Then a small wisp of golden light separated and floated out, replenishing Zou Wu's body.
After a moment, the miserable spotted dog stretched its muscles and bones and turned into a colorful tiger. The tiger knelt on the ground and bowed towards the house.
"Thank you, sir."
