Marlowe's Luminous Shadows Chapter 5

Briella Chen and I lived in such difficult days for three years with blood, tears and resentment.

Three years have passed by in a blink of an eye, and I am actually the only one who feels resentful.

Briella Chen is still the gentle breeze, it seems that the years have worn away her watery body and temperament, leaving no trace.

I often admire her character and have also asked her how she doesn't get angry or hurt.

But she only smiled lightly and told me: "Life is born to endure hardship."

I disagree very much with this sentence. I don’t understand why people are born to endure hardships. Why do the princes and nobles who were born with silver spoons in their mouths suffer? Even the first sip of milk tasted sweet.

I anxiously told Briella Chen these thoughts, hoping that she would join me in being cynical about the vagaries of the world.

But Briella Chen still smiled, took my hand, and said another sentence: "Marlowe, just stay alive."

Why live like this?

I was unwilling to do this, but when I lay naked next to Briella Chen and fell asleep countless times, I suddenly felt that living like this was okay.

In the first year, all the maids in Briella Chen's yard were transferred away. The second young master said, I am a fool and that's enough.

The next year, Briella Chen's food and clothing allowance was reduced to the servant's share. I laughed in my heart. It used to be the lady's share. She didn't have enough food and clothing, and there was no change.

In the third year, news came from the banker that Mr. Chen's old illness had relapsed, and the second young master rushed to take care of him. It happened that the eldest young master was out of town for the whole year. Without these two young masters constantly looking for trouble, Briella Chen  and I would have a much easier life. .

This is the fourth year. The second young master came back. That day he came to the yard with a bad look and cursed, but did not take action.

They also brought a girl over, who looked to be about the same age as Briella Chen. When she came over, she called her "Miss" and said that she was from Mr. Chen, specifically to take care of Briella Chen's food and daily life.

I didn't believe it at all, so I took a broom and wanted to beat her out, thinking that maybe it was the damn second young master who sent her here to harm Briella Chen.

But she took out a jade pendant and handed it to Briella Chen.

That was the first time Briella Chen yelled at me. She said, "Marlowe, don't be rude!"

I don't like that girl who smiles with her eyes squinted all day long and talks well to everyone.

But I also have to admit that since she came, Briella Chen's life has indeed become better day by day.

The reduced quota was made up, and the missing food and clothing were delivered in new sets. Even the maidservants who had been sent out were all brought back by the girl with a few words.

I looked at the small courtyard where only Briella Chen and I used to be, and it gradually became lively. I felt an indescribable sourness in my heart. Those differences in dignity and status that I had deliberately forgotten, clenched my heart like the claws of a beast, and I was a little breathless. Don't get angry.

That's right, I am just Briella Chen's maid, and even after three years, I am not as close to her as this "Sister Elowen Chun" who fell from the sky.

That girl's name is Elowen Chun. I've heard of this name before.

That day, the first person Briella Chen called when she woke up was her.

I didn't know that my idiot's memory was so good that I could remember Briella Chen's name only once.

"Marlowe, take a look at this one, what do you think?"

The unique rising voice of Elowen Chun was like a bird announcing good news. It floated in from the door and stopped me as I was about to turn around and walk away.

I didn't want to face her face to face, as that would make me feel ashamed, but she seemed to be aware of this and always took the initiative to talk to me.

But today, he found another reason to pick out fabrics and came to find me.

"I don't understand this." I turned around to look at her, "I'm a fool. If Sister Elowen Chun comes to ask me, it's better to ask someone else."

Elowen Chun came over with a frown: "You are not a fool."

She was the second person to say this in such a positive tone, but I was not happy at all and said, "I am, they all said so."

"You're not." Elowen Chun affirmed again. When she saw me turning around and wanting to leave, she grabbed my hand, "You have been with the lady for three years, so you should know what materials she likes. Please help me take a look."

Her name is Miss Briella Chen.

I suddenly felt a little happy again, turned around to look at her, and found that she was actually more pleasing to the eye.

After all, she calls her Miss, but I can call her Briella Chen . In this regard, I am still better than her.

Thinking about it, I unconsciously relaxed my tense back. When she saw it, she pulled me and walked to the side star room.

"Briella Chen  likes cloud-white, satin silk." I was pulled by her to sit down, took the piece of material and looked at it. The soft touch reminded me of Briella Chen 's smooth and boneless hands, "Red doesn't look good. Change."

"Huh?" Elowen Chun looked at me with a strange face, and after a long time he said, "Miss, do you have a favorite color?"

As soon as she finished speaking, I immediately realized that what she meant was that Briella Chen could not see the color, so how could she have a favorite color.

I was so angry that I threw the piece of fabric back to her and said, "In that case, you can go back and choose for yourself. Ah Xiang can't see it anyway. Why are you asking me?"

She seemed to realize that she was talking nonsense. She looked at my suddenly angry face and explained: "That's not what I meant. Blame me. I said the wrong thing. I haven't been back for too long and I forgot. In fact, the lady did have some words before." My favorite color seems to be cloud white. "

Briella Chen's wardrobe is all cloud white, how could you not like it? In my mind I blamed her for being careless.

But why do you say you had a favorite color before? Have you had it before?

I realized that the meaning of this sentence was unclear, and I had a guess in my mind. I immediately followed it up and asked, "Can Briella Chen  see before?"

"That's right." Elowen Chun said, "Didn't she tell you?"

No.

I bit my lip and scrunched up my neck without answering, and began to think wildly about why Briella Chen didn't say anything about this for three whole years.

After Elowen Chun finished speaking, he suddenly realized something. He covered his mouth with one hand and looked at me in panic: "Ah, I didn't know she didn't say it. I thought you knew."

Her words were like a knife, and I secretly wondered if she was implying that Briella Chen and I were only superficially intimate, but involved secret matters that she never mentioned.

Thinking about it, I became more and more annoyed. After being annoyed for a long time, I felt that I had no position. I was immediately discouraged and slumped on the stool without saying a word.

Elowen Chun was quiet for a while and then said, "Marlowe, are you angry?"

"No." I said.

"That's good." She sighed and ended the topic.

I couldn't help but glance at her and asked, "When did it happen?"

"Six years ago." After Elowen Chun said this, he raised his hand to stop, "I can't say more. If you want to know, you can ask her yourself."

I looked over her fingers to observe her expression. I was sure that I would not hear more stories. I lowered my head and said, "I am just one of her maids. No, I am not even a maid. I am just a maid." You idiot, how could she tell me these things?"

"But it's you, a fool that others call you, who has led her through these three years." Elowen Chun said, "Miss, she has never regarded you as a fool, or even as a maid."

What do you think of me?

I suddenly had the slightest hope in my heart, but this hope was instantly dissipated amidst the flashing scenes of people kneeling down to beg for mercy and saying ruinous words about Briella Chen for those who were eating.

"I'm just a fool, and everything a fool says is false." I said.

After saying that, I didn't care how confused Elowen Chun was by this meaningless statement, and ran out of the door as fast as I could.

I dare not admit that those words actually came from my heart, and they really couldn’t be truer.

But they were all in the wrong place at the wrong time and came out of my mouth in weird ways.

Just like my feelings for Briella Chen, they are also absurd.

All of this, the moment I became a fool, became true and false.

Elowen Chun didn't come to see me again for many days. I think she finally overturned her belief that I was normal and decided not to waste any more words with me.

I was so happy that I stayed in Briella Chen's room for most of the day, watching her sometimes sit quietly and listen to the birds chirping, and sometimes ask Elowen Chun to read to her.

I seemed to be transparent, sitting on a stool two feet away from her, staring at her without blinking.

Who knows how much longer we can watch it? It can only be seen every day.

Because I decided to run away.

Briella Chen's days are getting smoother and smoother, and the position beside her that originally belonged to me, but is now gradually occupied by Elowen Chun, is telling me.

Briella Chen doesn’t need me anymore. It’s time for me to work hard for myself.

I was saved by Briella Chen, so I took on the reputation of a fool and tried my best to keep her alive.

In the past three years, I spent countless nights gnawing hatred and dreaming. I actually blamed her. If she hadn't saved me from the second young master, I should have escaped from this annoying thing and reincarnated.

But I love her. I love her for giving me a beam of light in the abyss. I love her for being my sun. She pulls me out of hatred time and time again and tells me "Marlowe, you have to live."

The intertwining of love and hate originally maintained a balance with a delicate boundary, but when Elowen Chun came, I couldn't help but wonder if Briella Chen only regarded me as a stupid maid she could use in her miserable life.

Stupid enough to be willing to be scolded for her just to get a few compliments from her. Stupid enough to kick me away once someone rescues her.

I know I shouldn't think so maliciously of her, but I can't.

Maybe I am just like my bad guy dad, with the ruthless darkness inherited from my blood.
