At the end of the year, the weather is cold and water turns into ice.
In December, the capital city of Shenjing had several heavy snowfalls, and the mud brick and wooden walls were all covered in silver white.
The Wucheng Bingmasi and Shuntianfu Yamen runners braved the wind and snow, wearing two layers of padded jackets, but still couldn't resist the biting cold wind, and hunched their shoulders and shrank their necks in the cold. Whenever they returned from patrolling the city, they would always squeeze by the brazier to warm their stiff hands and feet, and then they felt alive again.
At the twelve gates of the imperial city, the guards changed from two posts a day to one post a day, and they were given hot soup on duty. Even so, standing on the top of the city for two hours in the coldest days of winter was enough to kill someone.
The guards who were conducting inspections in front of the city gates had a particularly hard time.
