In mid-to-late August 2009, Lacey spent two weeks at the Huairou Military Training Base in Beijing.
The student dormitories in the military training base are all bunk beds. Lacey slept in the lower bunk. She and a classmate on the upper bunk formed a deep friendship.
The classmate’s name was Feng Yuan, and Lacey liked her name very much. Because the homonyms of “Feng Yuan” are “Feng Yuan” and “Feng Yuan”, Lacey thinks the name is very clever.
Feng Yuan is 17 years old this year and comes from a southern city. She is the number one in science in a certain province this year, and she is also the first prize in both mathematics and physics provincial competitions.
Feng Yuan’s parents are both university professors. She has lived in a family environment full of mathematics since she was a child and has an innate talent for mathematics. Lacey and her hit it off right away. The two often discussed number theory and dynamic systems. Feng Yuan praised Lacey: “You have read a lot of books, you are so clever and smart.”
