Nathan Qin and the Twelve-Year Gamble follows the lives of four friends from Beijing who grew up together in the alleys of South Beijing. Nathan Qin, born into a once-famous family, now lives an ordinary life due to his family's decline. In 2004, Nathan Qin spends 37 days in detention for gambling, leading to his girlfriend Clara Jiang breaking up with him. Nathan Qin later meets Ava, a girl with a lemon scent in her hair, but their relationship faces many ups and downs over the years.

Oliver Li, known as "Fatty," is a legendary gambler who wins millions but loses his life. He falls in love with a nightclub worker but ends up marrying her sister by mistake. Gabriel, an unruly young man with perfect looks, finds himself in tears after being imprisoned, revealing a softer side of his tough exterior. Mason Ouyang, a smart but greedy individual, does anything to achieve his goals but faces a tragic end.

Over twelve years, from 2004 to 2016, the friends experience greed, betrayal, love, and loss. They gamble on money, life, and happiness, each with different destinies. The novel paints a vivid picture of their struggles and triumphs, capturing the essence of human nature and the cyclical nature of life.
