The Prince's Tomb is a cave tomb.

A cave tomb is one in which the builders dug a hole in the earth, first made a long and inclined tomb passage, and then built the tomb underground according to the living quarters of the time. This construction method was very popular after the Six Dynasties and until the Sui and Tang Dynasties.

Generally speaking, the tomb chamber is rectangular, and with the corridor and tomb passage it is similar to the shape of the Chinese character "甲". Some cave tombs have a skylight between the tomb chamber and the tomb passage, symbolizing a courtyard.

On the contrary, when later generations excavate, it is also a procedure to dig the tomb passage or patio first. Especially for a tomb like the Prince's Tomb with a double-layer brick roof, most people would not be stupid enough to say that they should dig straight ahead.
