This five-character couplet is so famous that almost anyone who has had any exposure to couplets has heard of it.
The five characters use the five elements as radicals in their structure, and the word is a parallel noun composed of and .
At the same time, the word "smoke" in the first couplet is a metaphor, "fog like smoke", which means the fog hides the pond and willows. The whole sentence depicts a quiet pond surrounded by green willows and shrouded in smoke.
Therefore, it is extremely difficult to come up with a second line that meets the requirements and is related to the artistic conception. No one in China has been able to come up with a perfect line for hundreds of years.
Of course, there are talented people everywhere, and they have all tried to come up with couplets, such as "the lights are high in the village and the bells are ringing" and "the beacons are extinguished and the wild geese are flying across the border." They all have wonderful artistic conception, but the words in the five lines are not in sync and the tones are different.
