Just ten days ago, when Chen Zhiyi's attack on Danzhou was at its most intense, a group of hundreds of refugees were heading towards Danzhou on a mountain road dozens of miles outside Danzhou City.
They were originally from Tongzhou, west of Danzhou. For many years, they lived in villages in the valley and were self-sufficient. Although their lives were poor, they were peaceful. Until the second prince's forces in Tongzhou rebelled, these people were forced to leave their hometown and migrate eastward.
Because there were many elderly people and children in the tribe, they all moved very slowly. They didn't have much wealth to begin with, so they lived frugally along the way. When they were about to reach Danzhou, they were already haggard.
To make matters worse, the wars in Danzhou continued and affected the surrounding areas. Many people started robbing and looting, targeting the old, weak, sick and disabled.
