As Hong Kong people were angry and public opinion was surging, the Nationalist government sent people to negotiate with the Hong Kong government and put forward the following four conditions: 1. Punish the police who caused the hawker's death; 2. Make adequate compensation to the family of the deceased; 3. The Hong Kong authorities guarantee that similar incidents will not happen again; 4. Return the leased land of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon to the Nationalist government.

The then Ambassador to China, Shi Diwen, protested, claiming that the anti-British sentiment in Guangdong and Hong Kong was entirely instigated by the Cantonese themselves.
At the same time, the Hong Kong High Court began the trial of Lin Xingse's manslaughter of Wang Shuixiang.
The prosecution's only witnesses were Huang You, the coffin shop owner who called the ambulance that day, and three children aged twelve or thirteen. Their testimonies were inconsistent, so much so that the defendant's defense lawyer believed that the prosecution's evidence was nonsense.
