In the early morning, before dawn, several long queues formed outside the city of Xuyi.
Most of the team were men in their twenties or early thirties, a small number were villagers from nearby villages, and most were skinny refugees with pale faces. They had all heard the news that the envoy had ordered conscription and were planning to try their luck.
At the city gate, two squads of private soldiers lowered the drawbridge and pushed aside the wooden fence blocking the gate. Several newly recruited soldiers pulled the noose together, and with a creaking sound, the heavy city gate slowly opened, and there was a commotion among the crowd.
"Open the door!"
Following this shout, everyone became excited, some even stepped forward to embrace him uncontrollably.
