Marcus was silent, and Theo, who was soaked all over, followed him in silence.
The words on the bark were blurred in a few places by the water on his fingertips, like fresh tears. But the blood was old and had completely seeped into the wood, and the edges and corners stained did not affect the integrity of the text.
Marcus read the letter over and over again. When he looked up again, his eyes were like pebbles polished to a shine at the bottom of a river. Except for a pool of water on top of his head, there was no emotion at all: "...you?"
Theo said quietly: "I."
