As Logan had expected, Chaoya Island was not a golden island. If the ancestors had accumulated some wealth, it had already been squandered by later generations over the past hundred years. Unlike inland areas, islands can produce food as long as there is land. The Chaoya people think highly of themselves and are unwilling to rely on the sea to fish and catch shrimp like other islands. Therefore, in order to make a living, they have to leave the island secretly. The men rely on some health preservation methods passed down by their ancestors to treat people, and the women rely on their melodious voices to make money as singers, so as to barely make a living.

"You come out to make enough money and then go back?" Logan asked, "Why don't you just stay in Chu?" The country is vast and prosperous, and the people in most places are very friendly to foreign visitors. Logically speaking, even if you just become a wandering singer, your life should be more enjoyable than on the island. Why bother to stay on a deserted island?

Ah Si said: "The Chaoya people will not easily leave their homeland."

"Then why did you leave again this time?" Logan asked.

Ah Si's eyes were filled with resentment. "There are two factions on the island. In order to drive the rest of the people off the island, one of the factions colluded with the bandits from Southeast Asia and brought them to the island to kill people. But the bandits had evil intentions and didn't care which faction the people on the island belonged to. They killed anyone they saw alive. In the end, only a few of us were left. We hid in a dilapidated boat and managed to save our lives. We escaped when it was dark."
