When she woke up, the pain in her lower abdomen had disappeared. Warmth crept up from her toes, and a thin layer of sweat formed on her neck, making Natalie think that her period was just an illusion.
When she tried to get up, she realized Mark's presence. The screen of the electronic reader had been turned off. Natalie leaned slightly to the side, and Mark's hand slipped from her lower abdomen, but she did not wake up.
With a dry throat, Natalie lay quietly, reaching out her hand in the darkness and gently stroking Mark's eyebrows.
In high school, Mark didn't always wear glasses. When she was reading, she would put her glasses on a thick stack of textbooks, lie down, put her forehead on her forearm, put the novel on her legs, and forget about everything else and ignore everyone.
Natalie had seen this scene countless times, from the initial surprise and confusion to the regret and reluctance on the eve of graduation. It turned out that the top students didn't need to work as hard as she did to easily get scores that were beyond the reach of others.
