During the period when the Turks surrendered, General Lu had already led his navy eastward along the Luo River, and then southward along the Grand Canal. In early May, he arrived in Shengzhou and joined up with Adrian Xiao's army.
When Xiao Jin entered Chu, half of the cities opened their gates to welcome the imperial army. This shows that although Dou Cheng was the king of Chu, he was not popular among the people.
While Adrian Xiao was recovering the Chu territory, he was also comforting the people in various places who were being abused and exploited by Dou Cheng, so the pace of the Eastern Expedition was not very fast.
Even so, by the time they joined up with General Lu, they had forced Dou Cheng's army to retreat to the vicinity of Yuyang.
Although Dou Cheng was in Lin'an, he concentrated his main forces in several cities of Changping in the north of Yuyang and Songwu Pass in the west of Lin'an, attempting to rely on the natural pass to intercept Adrian Xiao's army.
