Riley thought that burning charcoal was just a matter of throwing it in and taking it out, but Jasper's job of burning charcoal was to put the wood in, seal the kiln mouth, and seal the kiln completely when it was burned to a certain degree, using the residual heat to slowly turn the wood into charcoal.
Jasper was sweating when he came back. It was hard not to sweat when standing next to that hot charcoal kiln. Riley waited for him to go into the bathroom, wash up and change into clean clothes before they had breakfast together.
While eating, Jasper said that they could go into the woods to collect supplies later.
"Don't we need to watch over the charcoal kiln?" Riley asked, stopping to chew the corn.
"No need, it will be almost done when we come back in the evening. The kiln is too small and can't burn too much. I'll chop some thicker branches when I go out later and burn another kiln in the evening." Jasper finished his breakfast as quickly as possible and went downstairs to harvest the crops and feed the animals.
