The underground city was much bigger than Garr had expected, and it was expanding westwards day and night. The daily ration of the ratmen was just a piece of bread. They were short and could move freely in and out of the crude excavated tunnels. Due to their habits, they would not have any problem if they did not get sunlight for a long time, but they were overworked and dark and damp, which made most of them seriously ill.

"Don't be lazy!" The overseer holding a long whip whipped the skinny back of the rat man and stepped on his tail. "Stand up! Hurry up! You must dig to the designated position today, otherwise you will not get a drop of water!"

The rat man's nails cracked, and his torn skin and flesh mixed with the mud to form dark brown scabs. His tail was crushed to the point of numbness. His dry lips opened helplessly, swallowing saliva with difficulty. Dirty water was dripping from his head, and the rat man stuck out his tongue, desperately needing a little moisture.

"I told you that you won't get a drop of water." The supervisor kicked his head and the mud on the sole of his shoe rubbed on his face. "Get up. How many times have you fallen down? You have to work until you die. There is no place for lazy people here! Dirty reptile, hurry up!"

"Please be merciful." The hunchbacked old man put his hands together, pressed them against his forehead, and knelt on the ground, choking with sobs, "Please, give him some water. I am willing to do one more job. He just needs some water, please."
