The island is isolated overseas, and the birds here can't fly at all, and all of them have become cats' delicacies. In order to protect species, wild cats were eliminated, and then the rat plague flooded again...
Without technological restrictions and means, rats destroyed all underground roots and countless people were forced to build ships and head to New Zealand in order to survive.
