When I came to, I found myself lying on the cold, hard ground. My first feeling was pain. My head was throbbing and stabbing, and my skull felt like it was going to split. I raised my arm and gently touched the back of my head.
"There is no bleeding," a voice said, "but there will be horrible bruising tomorrow. And you will definitely have a severe headache."
I looked up and saw Paul Ross for the first time. He stood in front of me, baseball bat in hand. He was about my age, but taller and more built. He had a baby face and, like Alicia, reddish-brown hair. He smelled of alcohol.
I tried to struggle and sit up, but failed after several attempts.
"It's best to just lie still and recover a little."
