Adler knew what he saw in Lin's eyes. Lin had always been a very reserved person and could always hide his emotions well, but only the same kind could better understand the same kind.
Lin's feelings for Holsp are not that simple, so there is no better punishment than letting Lin leave the person he longs for.
Adler read Holsp's clerical report, and Holsp reported everything about Lin's arrangements.
