Early autumn in the mountains is the season for sleeping, especially in the early morning when the autumn rain is drizzling, it feels like a shame to God to get up.
Adrian Sun pulled the quilt, turned over and buried his face in it.
Outside the window came the noisy sounds of early-rising workers getting ready to start work, and there were footsteps in the corridor outside the door. He tried hard to regain the sleepiness that was fading away bit by bit. He was a kind-hearted man and was very reluctant to let God down.
But it seems without success.
Adrian Sun has always had trouble sleeping and has a hard time falling asleep. He can only coax himself into sleep by singing a lullaby and counting sheep. But he wakes up immediately if an ant in the house burps.
He hasn't slept well in three years since his dad threw him into this crappy place.
He was woken up by the workers at six in the morning. If not, he would be woken up by Manager Zhang next door. Even if these people were quiet, the chickens in the bungalow opposite would go crazy and wake him up at four o'clock.
The crowing sounds like laughing.
And couldn't stop laughing.
As usual, he couldn't sleep today. Not only could he not sleep, he couldn't even fall asleep when someone knocked on his door.
There were three clangs, followed by a voice full of energy: "Manager Sun! Someone's looking for you!"
You can tell from his voice that this man is Lao Liang. He has been here since the day my dad started working at the clay mining site. His voice is like thunder and he can fight without even using his fists.
"I haven't gotten up yet..." Adrian Sun replied in a dragging voice.
"Who's looking for him?" Manager Zhang's voice rang out.
"One called Miles Ma." said Lao Liang.
"Miles Ma?" Manager Zhang was obviously unfamiliar with the name and seemed to be thinking.
Liangzi?
Adrian Sun suddenly pulled his head out from under the quilt.
Manager Zhang didn't know Miles Ma, but this name had a very different meaning to him at this moment. It was the kind of meaning that could make one instantly throw off the quilt, jump out of bed, and open the door wearing only his shorts.
"Miles Ma?" Adrian Sun asked again while looking at Lao Liang outside the door. The cold autumn wind blowing in from the corridor gave him goose bumps all over his body.
"...Yes, Miles Ma. He said his name is Miles Ma." Lao Liang glanced at him from head to toe. "Be careful of catching a cold. Didn't he have a fever last month?"
"Where is he?" Adrian Sun turned around and went back to the room, pulled his clothes and pants from the chair beside the bed and put them on.
"It's in the engineering department office." said Lao Liang.
Adrian Sun didn't ask any more questions. He took his coat, put it on as he walked, walked out of the house, ran downstairs, and went straight to the engineering department office opposite the dormitory building.
This engineering department was formerly called the command center. It was changed after he came. They set up a command center just to dig some kaolin. If you didn't know, you would think they were digging trenches.
Miles Ma was standing outside the office, wearing sunglasses, and his bright smile could be seen from a distance.
"What are you doing here?" Adrian Sun walked up to him and took off his sunglasses. "Your speech is not good and you are pretending to be blind."
"I'll come, pick you up," Miles Ma chuckled twice, thought for a moment and came over to give him a big hug, "You've lost weight...you've lost weight."
Adrian Sun didn't say anything. He raised his hand to check the time and found that he didn't bring his watch.
"Let's go." Miles Ma took out a pair of car keys from his pocket and put them in his hand.
"Now?" Adrian Sun put his sunglasses back on Miles Ma's face and looked back. Manager Zhang was standing in the corridor on the second floor looking at him.
"Of course, it's... now," Miles Ma also looked over there, "Brother... brother, look, look for a long time, if you don't leave now, you should... tell the old man."
"I just got up and haven't washed yet," Adrian Sun rubbed his face, "How did you get here?"
"Drive." Miles Ma pointed to the car keys in his hand.
Adrian Sun looked at the car keys, then turned his head to look at the second floor behind him. Manager Zhang was walking towards the stairs at the end while talking on the phone.
I guess it was a report.
He frowned and patted Miles Ma on the shoulder: "Let's go."
"Dong, you don't want to take the things, huh?" Miles Ma asked.
"No," he said.
Although he has been here for three years, there is basically nothing in his room, except for a few sets of clothes and a pile of kaolin information, maps and so on. He would flip through them when he has nothing to do. The edges of these books are curled up, and they look like a family tree that has been flipped for a hundred years.
He just stays here and does nothing. He doesn't have to take care of the accounts, the people, or the soil. Manager Zhang usually drags him to the construction site to walk around and ask him about the soil, how much of the soil is in this batch, and how the quality is. His dad just keeps him busy.
He agreed to stay for three years, and today is October 9th, exactly three years.
He had been planning to contact Miles Ma in two days and ask him to come and find a way to get him away, but he didn't expect that Miles Ma was more anxious than him and came over at a faster time.
He glanced at Miles Ma who was following him. He was indeed his best friend who was kicked out of the "school" by his father because of him.
But after the two of them walked out of the yard, Adrian Sun was stunned when he saw the car parked next to the mound at the door: "What is this?"
"A car." said Miles Ma.
"You drove this car here?" Adrian Sun stared at the car in front of him, almost unable to blink, and then looked down at the car keys in his hand to make sure he was not mistaken, "You drove a Beetle here? You are quite capable! I hope the chassis was not scratched!"
"Urgent, couldn't... couldn't find it, no, no other car." Miles Ma said.
"I won't drive this thing," Adrian Sun turned around and walked back, "If I drive it halfway, there will be only a shell left. I don't want to walk, and it's raining."
"Ask, ask, ask... Adrian Sun!" Miles Ma got anxious when he saw him like this, and came over to grab him, "Don't worry, young master, the old man is going to regret it, let someone stop him, you still... still have three years."
Adrian Sun stopped, looked at the yard, then turned his head to look at the road leading outside, and finally gritted his teeth and got in the car.
"Why don't you drive?" he asked Miles Ma after starting the car.
"You are old and a veteran, you drive." Miles Ma said while looking back with some worry.
"I haven't had a car accident for three years," Adrian Sun drove out. He had only driven ten meters when he hit a pothole and was almost biting his tongue. "This road is worse than when I came here."
"You were all asked to pull...the dirt truck ran over it." Miles Ma smiled, holding onto his seat belt.
We drove the car out of the small road and bumped all the way to the "main road". This road was only half a meter wider than the one outside the engineering department's yard. It used to be a cement road, but now it's just mud, stones and potholes.
"Your phone is gone, can you take it?" Miles Ma suddenly remembered and asked while pulling at the seat belt.
"I didn't take anything except the person," Adrian Sun looked in the rearview mirror. No one caught up with him. A yellow muddy and stone road stretched behind the car, empty of people. "I don't usually use the phone, so it doesn't matter whether I take it or not."
"Your old... that one is here with me," Miles Ma said. "The number is still there."
Adrian Sun glanced at him, said nothing, and just patted him on the shoulder.
Normally, someone like him would have felt a little sad if he suddenly left the place where he had lived for three years, but he didn't. The only thought in his mind was to leave as quickly as possible, and the car was shaking as he drove along in the rain.
The sides of the road were covered in dust and dirt, and the leaves of the grass and bushes that grew there were all white. It had been raining since last night, but it had not been able to wash out the original green color of the leaves.
I actually stayed in such a place for three years. I really have perseverance.
I guess he is the only one who can compete with his own father to this level.
"Why don't you stop him!" Sun Zhengzhi yelled while holding the phone and slapped the desk.
Sun Yao, who was sitting on the sofa in the reception room, was startled and almost dropped the cup in her hand. She stood up, walked to her father and waved to him.
Sun Zhengzhi hung up the phone and threw it on the table, then turned to look at her: "You know about this, right?"
"I don't know," Sun Yao frowned, "even if I knew, I wouldn't let Liangzi pick him up."
"That's your sister!" Sun Zhengzhi couldn't suppress his anger anymore and sat down heavily on the chair.
"It may not be Jiayue," Sun Yao went over to pour him a glass of water, "Liangzi has such a close relationship with him, it's not surprising that he went to pick her up."
"Where did he get the car? Zhang Bing said he was driving a Beetle! Where did Miles Ma get the Beetle? He only had a broken van, a second-hand one at that!" Sun Zhengzhi slammed the table again.
Sun Yao didn't say anything.
"Everyone is really good!" Sun Zhengzhi's forehead veins throbbed, "really good!"
"Dad," Sun Yao paused before walking behind him and gently pinching his shoulder, "Why are you so angry? I'm going to say something you don't want to hear... You said that Adrian Sun would be there for three years. Now that three years have passed, it's normal for him to come back."
"Don't support him!" Sun Zhengzhi slapped her hand away and stood up. "I said to stay for three years, but I didn't say he could come back after three years. I'll have someone send him back to stay for another three years! Thirty years is not a long time for this useless guy!"
"Dad," Sun Yao sighed, "How long are you going to keep doing this? He hasn't been home for three years, and the Chinese New Year is only two months away... My mom misses him so much..."
"So what?" Sun Zhengzhi looked at her, sneered, and interrupted her, "Do you think he will go home for the New Year?"
Sun Yao didn't say anything else. After a moment of silence, he stood up and left the office. He told the secretary outside the door to bring in a cup of ginseng tea and then left.
Adrian Sun didn't say a word along the way. The Beetle had a low chassis. If it rained on this road for another two days, he and Miles Ma would definitely get stuck in the car. Maybe then they would be caught by his father's men and taken back to the trench construction site.
Moreover, the road was so bumpy that he was afraid of knocking his teeth when he spoke. He couldn't let his neat, white teeth get hurt. In the past, someone even approached him to shoot a toothpaste commercial.
After bumping on the road for more than an hour, he finally got on a flat road. He breathed a sigh of relief, tightened his seat belt, and asked Miles Ma: "Where did the car come from?"
"Borrow it, borrow it," Miles Ma said, and he also pulled his seat belt, took out a cigarette and put it in his mouth, ready to light it. "I'll lend it to you, yes, you can drive it."
"Don't talk nonsense to me," Adrian Sun reached out and took the cigarette from his mouth and threw it out of the window, "Tell me, is it my second sister's or my mother's?"
"No." Miles Ma put the cigarette box back into his pocket.
"Liangzi, how many years have I known you?" Adrian Sun glanced at him. "This should be Sun Jiayue's car... Is it hers or did she buy it for me?"
Miles Ma glanced at him, and after a moment's silence, he said, "I bought it for... you."
"I don't want it," Adrian Sun said with a sigh, "It's like sitting in a shoe box."
"Ask... ask, ask..." Miles Ma sighed and turned to him.
"Ask." Adrian Sun glanced at him.
"He." Miles Ma finished speaking.
"Can't you just speak directly?" Adrian Sun couldn't help laughing.
"Calling by name makes it more serious and meaningful." Miles Ma also laughed, then stopped smiling. "If it were me, I'd say you should go and admit your mistake to the old man."
"What are you admitting?" Adrian Sun stepped on the brakes and stopped the car in the middle of the road. "What have I done wrong? Is it wrong that I like men? Is it wrong that I don't want to make pottery? Is it wrong that I don't like those bottles, plates and jars? I have been in the mountains for three years, am I wrong?"
"I'm not, it's not that..." Miles Ma was so confused after being scolded by him.
"I know what you mean," Adrian Sun drove the car forward again, "He thinks I'm not good enough, doesn't he? I can't be the kind of person he wants, right?"
Miles Ma sighed, reached into his pocket and then stopped.
"If you want to smoke, please open the window."
"I'm not saying, you," Miles Ma took out a cigarette and lit it, "you don't want to be the kind of...tool he wants, and you haven't become...anything else."
Adrian Sun was speechless for a long time. He turned around and looked at Miles Ma seriously: "You are not good at speaking."
It was supposed to be a four or five hour drive, but because the road was so bad, the car didn't arrive until the afternoon when it reached Adrian Sun's residence.
Miles Ma did not tell anyone about bringing him back this time, so there was no lively scene like before when a group of people would come to welcome him whenever he came back from somewhere.
Although Adrian Sun didn't like the bragging and talking of a group of people at the dinner table, he suddenly felt a little lonely when he was standing in the living room of his room.
After walking around several rooms, I stood in the living room, not knowing what to do.
"I've cleaned it up." Miles Ma said on the side.
"I can see that there is no dust at all." Adrian Sun ran his finger across the table and it was very clean.
"Here's the key. It's yours." Miles Ma took out the key he left behind before he went into the mountains to practice and placed it on the table. "Remember that set. Remember to come back."
"Hmm?" Adrian Sun glanced at him.
He had two sets of keys. Before leaving, he gave one set to Miles Ma and the other set to Li Bowen.
"You have to come back," Miles Ma said, "or you can change the lock."
"He brought people here?" Adrian Sun asked as he entered the bedroom. It was obvious that the table covers and quilt covers were all newly replaced by Miles Ma. He opened the closet and took a look. In addition to the clothes he didn't take away, there were also two sets of women's skirts. He took them out and threw them on the sofa in the living room. "Fcuk, why didn't you throw them away?"
"Leave it for your review." Miles Ma said.
Adrian Sun checked twice more and found nothing else. He guessed that if there was anything, Miles Ma had already cleaned it up.
"Where is my old phone?" he asked Miles Ma.
Miles Ma took out a mobile phone from the drawer under the coffee table and handed it to him. It was already charged and turned on.
He took the phone and was about to dial, but Miles Ma stopped him and said, "First, let's eat. It's my treat."
"Are you welcoming me?" Adrian Sun smiled and put his phone in his pocket. "Just the two of us?"
"If you think there are not enough people, I'll find you two more inflatable dolls," Miles Ma said, "one on each side."
"I think so," Adrian Sun stretched, "Let me make it clear first, although I haven't eaten good food for three years, I still won't go to those restaurants that I used to get tired of."
"New." Miles Ma nodded.
Adrian Sun went into the bathroom, took a shower, changed his clothes, looked in front of the mirror, and felt like he was reborn.
He didn't have the heart to look in the mirror much during the three years he spent in the mountains.
This hairstyle still needs to be redone. I got it done at the barber shop in the town when I went to the neighboring town with Manager Zhang to purchase goods. It exudes the magic of Master Wang at the village entrance.
"You drive," Adrian Sun threw the Beetle keys to Miles Ma as they went out, "I don't know the road anymore."
Miles Ma took the key and laughed twice.
"I will return this car to Sun Jiayue tomorrow. I don't drive this thing." Adrian Sun walked out the door. His house was on the first floor. There was a small yard of seven or eight square meters outside the door. He planted a lot of flowers in the yard. Miles Ma took good care of them in the past three years since he came back, and they were still full of vitality.
"Do you drive a motorcycle?" Miles Ma asked, "or an electric... battery?"
"Can I walk?" Adrian Sun said, thinking for a moment and then turned to look at him, "Forget it, I won't return the car to Sun Jiayue. She will definitely say that if you don't want it, just throw it on the side of the road. I'll keep the car and you can drive it."
Before Miles Ma could speak, Adrian Sun walked out of the yard and was about to walk towards the car when a female voice came from behind him: "Adrian Sun!"
You just came back and you already know someone?
He turned his head and looked behind him. A woman was walking slowly towards him, twisting her steps as she went. Behind her was a man. The man was quite tall and wore a baseball cap. He also had a pair of large headphones around his neck. His appearance could not be seen clearly.
"You are..." Adrian Sun stared at the woman for several times. She was wearing a pair of sunglasses that covered half of her face. The remaining half of her face was quite pretty, but her makeup was very heavy. She looked a little familiar, but he couldn't figure out who she was.
"Look," the woman stopped in front of him, folded her arms and sneered, then turned sideways and said to the person behind her, "It's been so many years since we last met, and your father doesn't recognize me anymore."
Adrian Sun was stunned for a moment, then suddenly turned to look at Miles Ma: "What did this sister say?"
"She said that, that boy, is..." Miles Ma pointed behind the woman, "your son."
