Zombies are creatures that resemble the living dead and have the instinct to prey on humans. This theme has been used repeatedly in games and movies and is very familiar to everyone.

"Although I don't want to admit it, we are indeed in an extremely bad situation. This dormitory building, the entire school, and perhaps the entire city are already full of zombies." After leaving the dormitory building, the boy stood under the street light, staring at the blood-stained fruit knife in his hand seriously, "Today's experience can probably be attributed to the category of metaphysics. Oh, by the way, my name is Blake Song, a senior in clinical medicine, what about you?"

"Ethan, landscape architecture, sophomore."

Blake Song nodded.

Ethan intuitively felt that he was not interested in his answer, so he just nodded politely. His attention seemed to be more focused on the surrounding environment. The sound of the plastic bag blowing through the bushes just now made Blake Song alert and cautious.

He is a very calm and vigilant person. Ethan has complicated feelings towards the person in front of him. On the one hand, he instinctively feels close to Blake Song, who shares the same suffering as him. On the other hand, he is also vaguely afraid of this person - he has not forgotten how cold his tone was when he gave him the order to "kill".

Not far from the dormitory building was the wall. This was the North Dormitory Area. The dormitory area and teaching area of   University A were integrated, and the dormitory area was divided into two parts, north and south. The dormitory building they were in happened to be the outermost edge of the North Dormitory Area. As long as they climbed over the wall less than two meters high, they could reach the road outside, but...

"It seems that we can't leave this school for the time being. Like I said just now, the situation tonight belongs to the realm of metaphysics." Blake Song pushed his glasses on the bridge of his nose and pointed to the wall not far away.

Only then did Ethan notice that the wall, which was originally less than two meters high, had somehow become an insurmountable wall.

This incredible change stunned Ethan. If the appearance of zombies could be explained by the common virus in movies, then what about the wall in front of him? When he returned to the dormitory from the classroom more than ten minutes ago, the wall was still in its normal state!

"It seems I have to believe that phone call." Blake Song took out his cell phone from his pocket and took a look. "No signal."

Ethan checked his phone, and there was no signal either. The time was 20:10, and only ten minutes had passed, but it felt like a century.

"Was the phone call you were talking about from a girl? What did she talk about games?" Ethan asked.

"It seems that we have all received that call. Now it seems to be safe here with a wide view. Let's check what is happening now and exchange information." Blake Song played with the fruit knife in his hand and made a heavy cut on the camphor tree next to him, as if venting the uneasiness accumulated in his heart - although Ethan did not feel much uneasiness from him.

Ethan had no objection and simply told him how he skipped class and returned to the dormitory, and finally met Blake Song on the first floor.

Blake Song listened to him quietly, and then said: "My experience is similar to yours. At first I thought it was a prank, but soon I realized that there was something wrong with my memory. When the phone rang, I was sitting in front of the computer writing a paper. The time was 20:00. The last line of the paper was written by me five minutes ago. At that time, I looked at the time in the lower right corner of the computer, 19:55. For a full five minutes, I could not remember what I was thinking about or what I had done. It was as if I was just sitting in front of the computer in a daze, but based on my understanding of myself, this is impossible. This five-minute blank is a very obvious memory gap, which is really an unusual thing."

Ethan suddenly remembered himself standing blankly in the corridor when the phone rang. When he recalled it now, he also realized the blank space in his memory.

"I had another roommate who was on the balcony outside the dormitory making a phone call. After I hung up the call, he banged on the glass door of the balcony like a madman and tried to rush in to attack me," said Blake Song.

Ethan remembered that he heard the sound of glass breaking.

"I found a way to get rid of him, took a fruit knife, closed the door and went downstairs. I wasn't sure if anyone else had mutated into a zombie. When I went downstairs, I took a bucket from the corridor so that I could hold their heads to avoid being bitten." Blake Song's voice was calm. Perhaps because he studied medicine, he was not very afraid of zombies, but the slight tremor in his voice exposed his confusion in the upheaval. "Then I met you downstairs. Overall, we were lucky. At this time, everyone was either in class or in the dormitory, so there was not much traffic. Otherwise, we might have been stuck and couldn't get out."

Blake Song's analysis gradually calmed Ethan down. He carefully recalled everything that happened today and became more and more confused: Why did only the two of them receive the call, while everyone else seemed to have turned into zombies? Why did the school wall suddenly become higher? They seemed to be trapped here? Who was the person who called them, and what was his purpose?

There was a hint of chill in the autumn night wind, and the fallen leaves at my feet made a rustling sound.

"Today is Halloween, right?" Blake Song looked around and asked thoughtfully.

Ethan tried to squeeze a smile from his stiff face: "Don't tell me this is a Halloween prank. I have never seen a worse prank than this."

Prank…phone…the female voice on the phone…easter egg.

Ethan's heart sank and his stomach cramped.

"It seems you have thought of it." Blake Song said.

"Eggs! That girl! At noon, a girl was handing out Easter eggs in the square in front of the cafeteria!" Ethan was startled. That clear memory was coated with a faint blood color in this horrible night. Every move of that girl with delicate makeup and sweet looks kept replaying in his mind. That should have been a very pleasant voice, with a little bit of coquettishness when speaking, but now thinking about it makes people feel chilled. That sweet voice is like boiling water mixed with too much white sugar, making people's throats feel dehydrated and burning.

"At that time, she said it was a club activity for Halloween. She also asked me to leave my signature in a notebook. I was the first one... There were a total of... thirteen Easter eggs. Yes, there were twelve in the box, and she was holding one in her hand. There were thirteen in total." Ethan tried to speak in a calm voice, but his fingers twitched nervously a few times.

He still remembers the girl's smile at that time, which was innocent and sweet, but also had a strange meaning that he couldn't understand. Looking back now, it was a look of malicious intent, just like a child destroying things with an ignorant smile, crushing ants with fingers, strangling summer cicadas with ropes, and using fine salt to absorb the moisture of slugs, watching them slowly shrivel into a motionless corpse. Because there is no empathy, there is no awareness of cruelty.

Blake Song's fruit knife fell to the ground. He frowned, bent down to pick it up, but he no longer played with it. Instead, he held it carefully in his hand.

---The man didn't seem as calm as he imagined, Ethan couldn't help but think so.

The other party's calmness gave Ethan an invisible pressure. After all, they had just experienced such a dramatic change not long ago. However, his panic-stricken appearance was too different from the other party's cautious and planned actions, which inevitably made him feel frustrated. Now seeing Blake Song showing his humane side, he felt more intimate.

After all, we are all just ordinary college students, Ethan thought.

"I'm one of the ones in the middle, but I'm quite impressed by the guy in the front... If I could choose, I really don't want to meet him under these circumstances." Blake Song sighed imperceptibly, which aroused Ethan's curiosity, but Blake Song didn't seem to be interested in continuing. He said, "Do you remember what was written on the Easter egg? Mine said 'Eating is an instinct'. I didn't know what it meant at first, but now I know."

"Mine is different from yours," Ethan said, "My Easter egg says 'Dawn is Hope'."

Blake Song was stunned for a moment, then he smiled with relief: "This is probably the best news I've heard tonight."

"You mean..." Ethan looked at him in surprise.

Blake Song nodded slightly: "Although it is still unclear how all this happened, it seems that everyone who got the Easter eggs was forced to participate in this 'game'. The words on each Easter egg are a hint. As long as we hold on until dawn, this nightmare will most likely end."

Ethan let out a long breath, and his anxious heart relaxed a little.

"Let's follow the instructions on the phone and go to the Clock Square. The other survivors should also gather there. We can exchange information and think of a solution. However, it may be dangerous on the way there, so we need to find a weapon. Follow me. There should be a knife or something like that in the dormitory manager's kitchen."

Blake Song finished speaking and strode towards the dormitory. Ethan looked up at the crescent moon above his head, which was still a faint crimson, making him feel ominous. He couldn't help but frowned and gritted his teeth to keep up with Blake Song's footsteps.

"The dormitory manager of our building is named Tong. She is divorced and has a primary school child. She just came out of the kitchen and the bedroom door was closed. It seems that the child is in the bedroom. There is no need to provoke him. We can find what we want in the kitchen." Blake Song said to Ethan as if explaining, and pushed open the door of the narrow kitchen.

With a "click", the light came on, and Ethan followed Blake Song into the kitchen. He immediately took a liking to the kitchen knife next to the chopping board. The cold metal handle in his hand gave him a little more confidence.

"If I were you, I would definitely choose the spare water pipe next to it." Blake Song's cold voice came, "You saw it just now. Zombies are different from humans. The heart, a fatal part, is meaningless to them. The human skull is too hard. Unless you stab it from the eye socket to destroy the brain, or put the knife into its mouth and pierce the upper jaw like pulling out a tooth from the tiger's mouth, it is difficult to kill it in one go. Cutting off the cervical vertebrae is also a way, but the kitchen knife is too short. If the blade is stuck in the cervical vertebrae, it is easy to be bitten. For safety reasons, you should take the water pipe."

The water pipe didn't look as safe as a knife, but out of trust in Blake Song, Ethan weighed it and picked up the almost one-meter-long iron water pipe, looked at it carefully, and finally nodded and followed his advice.

Blake Song, on the other hand, picked up the abandoned kitchen knife as if nothing had happened: "Let's go, we should go to the square."
