The night wind in the darkness sobbed like a sob, and seemed to be mixed with a rotten smell.
The footsteps of Ethan and Blake Song echoed on the empty cement road. The green belts on both sides seemed to hide monsters lurking around them in the dim light. The old street lamp above their heads made two "hissing" sounds and then "popped" out.
The sudden darkness made Ethan's hair stand on end. He tightened his grip on the iron pipe, and the sweat from his palms almost made his hands slip.
"Here it comes." Blake Song's voice sounded, with a hint of trembling in the tail tone that could not be concealed no matter how hard he tried to restrain himself.
Ethan stared straight ahead. Less than ten meters away, a staggering figure was walking towards them. The stiff movements looked indescribably strange. It was so slow, but it was so scary that it almost suffocated them. It was their dead counterpart. Once a human, now a predator.
"If there's only one, it's easy to deal with. I'll attract its attention, and you hit its cervical vertebrae and the back of its head with a water pipe. Remember, hit it hard!" Blake Song said coldly.
Ethan nodded vigorously, holding the water pipe even tighter, the veins on the back of his hands bulged.
"Don't be so nervous, or your energy will be depleted quickly. We'll have to spend at least nine to ten hours like this." Blake Song said soothingly, pointing to the camphor tree nearby, "Climb up, and wait for me to lure it away before coming down to attack."
The zombies were getting closer and closer to Blake Song, and he was ready to run away at any time, but he didn't take any action. Ethan squatted on the tree and watched, and felt his legs and feet were weak. He even doubted whether he had the courage to jump down from here. But if he ran away, he would lose his only teammate...
Five meters, four meters, three meters...
The zombie's slow movements paused for a moment, and then suddenly became swift. Ethan could see clearly from the tree that the zombie was almost jumping towards Blake Song!
Blake Song nimbly kicked the zombie in the stomach, then quickly took two steps back, turned around and started running. The zombie that was kicked to the ground slowly got up and continued to chase him step by step in slow movements. Because Blake Song was too close to the zombie, it was not attracted at all by Ethan on the tree a few meters away.
"Get started!" Blake Song shouted loudly.
The command was like a lightning that woke up Ethan, whose mind was full of confusion. He jumped down from the tree without thinking, raised the iron pipe in his hand, roared, and hit the back of the zombie's head with force. Amid the dull knocking sound, the zombie staggered forward and bent down, maintaining the bent posture, and suddenly turned his head, twisting his neck 180 degrees!
In the dim light, the zombie's bulging eyes, fangs piercing its lips, and ferocious facial muscles were like a horrible nightmare! It slowly opened its mouth, revealing its bloodshot fangs, and its cloudy eyes seemed to be filled with excitement at finding its prey!
It was too close. At such a close distance, Ethan could clearly smell the disgusting rotten smell on the other person!
"Ah---!" The zombie growled and pounced towards Ethan in a twisted state!
Ethan's mind was blank. Under the imminent threat of death, he even forgot to run away. The instinct of survival forced him to raise the weapon in his hand, burst out with amazing strength, roared and hit the zombie's head hard, and the creepy knocking sound continued. The naked fear was imprinted in Ethan's eyes, so that he could only see the monster in front of him!
---Kill it kill it kill it kill it kill it!
"enough!"
Ethan turned a deaf ear to Blake Song's words of dissuasion, or it could be said that at this moment, the only thing left in his consciousness was the instinct of killing. Everything in the outside world was far away from him. He hit the zombie's head with all his might. Even though it had already fallen to the ground and was no longer moving, he continued to hit it like a madman.
"I've said enough! Ethan!"
Ethan was hugged from behind. In his panic, he thought he was attacked by a zombie. He struggled hard for a few times. With his adrenaline surge, Ethan actually flipped Blake Song over. The two fell to the ground together. The iron pipe fell to the ground with a "bang". Blake Song, who was pressed to the ground as a meat cushion, groaned. Ethan woke up and quickly turned over and asked: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Are you okay?"
Blake Song took off his glasses, and a small red mark was left on the bridge of his nose. He pinched his nose and said helplessly, "Are you awake now?"
Ethan nodded hesitantly, then he remembered the zombie he had just beaten. It was already dead, bloodied and limp on the ground, and its death was not much better than that of the dormitory manager who had turned into a zombie.
Ethan still felt nauseous, but he didn't have the nausea that he couldn't help vomiting. Although his hands were still so sore that he couldn't use any strength, he was able to calmly think about how many times he had missed the target when he was "crazy". If every time he hit the head, three or five hits would have shattered the skull, right?
Ethan, who was still sitting on the ground, covered his forehead. He was about to collapse, and he was collapsing because he was adapting to this death game. He had never killed a chicken before today, but in less than 20 minutes, he had killed two zombies, each with a smashed head and splattered brains. This was a naked, bloody massacre, and there were endless zombies waiting for him in this campus. It was like a nightmare that he could never wake up from. Overnight, familiar classmates and teachers all turned into such monsters. If he didn't kill them, he would die, but if he continued to kill, he would go crazy...
This feeling was too abominable and disgusting. Why did he have to kill someone? Why did he have to participate in this perverted "game"? He didn't want to do this at all!
A soft sigh sounded in his ears. Blake Song sat down beside him, holding his shoulders and forcing him to look directly into his eyes, dark, transparent eyes: "I will only say this once, listen carefully. We are not in this situation voluntarily, but we have no choice. Now our enemies are our former classmates and teachers, but they have no self-awareness and are no longer human. They are just monsters in familiar skins and are your enemies. If this familiar shell makes you hesitate or weak in your heart, you will die."
Blake Song looked at Ethan, with unknown emotions flashing in his eyes.
"You have two choices: first, die in their mouths and become one of their kind. In this case, I will abandon you without hesitation, or even kill you. Second, we live together, kill them to survive, hold on until dawn, leave this game together, and return to our previous peaceful life. Although this process will definitely be painful and dangerous, if you do nothing but pray for a miracle, you might as well be bitten to death at the beginning to avoid suffering here."
Blake Song took a deep breath and stared at him intently: "Okay, now you can choose."
My hands were shaking, every knuckle and every nerve was trembling. My heart was beating so fast that it almost jumped out of my throat, and a multiple-choice question was forcefully poured into my blank brain.
In fact, there was no good choice at all. The moment he picked up a chair and smashed the zombies in the dormitory building, he had already made his choice. All the hesitation and demurrer after that were nothing but pretentiousness.
Ethan clenched his hands, still without a trace of a smile, but his pale face no longer showed the look of impending collapse.
"Live, let's live together!"
Blake Song nodded with satisfaction and patted his shoulder: "Since you have made up your mind, don't hesitate any longer. Don't let me see your useless look again. It's not like you're going to kill someone, so why do you have to be so desperate?"
"Now, take a deep breath."
Ethan obediently took a deep breath, then slowly exhaled, as if exhaling all the previous panic.
"Have you recovered your strength? We should go to the Clock Square." Blake Song picked up the iron pipe that had just fallen on the ground and handed it to Ethan. The iron pipe had been obviously bent due to the impact on the skull, but it seemed to be still usable.
Ethan finally felt his racing heartbeat slow down a little, his sore arms regained some strength, and most importantly, he dared to face reality.
Although killing zombies is disgusting and always reminds him of killing people, if he doesn't do it, he will die here.
He did nothing wrong, he just wanted to survive.
"Let's go." Blake Song said, and walked towards the dormitory gate. From the west gate of the North Dormitory District, you can reach the teaching area, which is not far from the clock square. But the bad thing is that there are seven teaching buildings numbered AG around the clock square. There are sky bridges connecting the teaching buildings. It is also the area with the most students. In other words, it is also the area with the most zombies.
Isn't he afraid? Ethan looked at Blake Song's straight back and couldn't help but feel confused. Why, why can he be so calm? Shouldn't he be afraid when encountering such an incident?
Ethan was confused, yet grateful for Blake Song's calmness and fearlessness. Otherwise, he would only be more panicked than he is now... or even more miserable, as he wouldn't even have the chance to panic.
Senior Blake Song should be a trustworthy companion, Ethan thought.
"We're here. We can see the gate from here. But the situation is not good..." Blake Song pushed his glasses on the bridge of his nose and looked towards the west gate of the dormitory area in front of him.
Ethan followed him and watched from afar. They were still several dozen meters away from the gate, and the wind was in their favor. The dozen or so zombies lingering near the gate did not smell their breath, but just walked back and forth, making meaningless low growls. Their shadows were elongated by the light of the street lamps, drawing a shuddering boundary between light and shadow.
The wind brought a rustling sound and the rustling of clothes.
"Who's there?!" Blake Song suddenly turned around and shouted in a low voice, holding a kitchen knife in his hand and staring vigilantly at the bushes beside him.
