"Don't, don't do it, I'm alive and I mean no harm!" A panicked female voice rang out.
"Come out!" Blake Song said coldly, with no intention of putting down the knife in his hand.
The bushes rustled a few times, and a pale girl came out, barefoot, wearing a miniskirt and a thin shirt, with nothing to keep warm except a pair of plush black gloves and a scarf. She held a shovel in her right hand and looked at Ethan and Blake Song with trepidation.
A gust of cold wind blew by, she shivered a few times, and lowered her head timidly.
Ethan took one look at her torn stockings and couldn't help but shudder. This outfit was not very warm.
The girl looked like she was about to cry: "I, I don't know what happened. I was about to go back to the dorm when I received the call just now, and suddenly everything around me became quiet. I, I was so scared. And that monster..." As she spoke, she seemed to remember the scene again, and her body began to tremble.
"Where are your shoes?" Blake Song asked.
"I lost it. I can't run fast with high heels..." The girl choked up, tears falling on her plush black gloves, "Luckily the flower bed over there is being renovated, and I found a shovel..."
Ethan couldn't bear to see a girl crying so miserably, so he comforted her, "It's okay now, don't cry. My name is Ethan, he is Blake Song, what about you?"
The girl seemed to be relieved, looked at him gratefully, sniffed and said, "My name is Clara Zhou."
Blake Song looked at her for a few seconds, then his gaze turned to the west gate in the distance.
The zombies were wandering there, with no intention of leaving. He couldn't help but frown, as if thinking about a way to break through.
"Our next step is to go to Clock Square, what about you?" Blake Song asked Clara Zhou.
In the midst of the fear of being surrounded on all sides, Clara Zhou finally saw a glimmer of hope, and she cried out as if she had grabbed a life-saving straw: "I'll go with you! Together! Don't leave me alone!"
"Shut up!" Blake Song shouted coldly. Clara Zhou, who was hysterically venting her fear, was stared at by his cold gaze. She was stunned and took a step closer to Ethan in fear.
"The fastest way to get to Clock Square is to go through this gate. I don't recommend going out from other exits, because you may encounter more zombies on the road, and there is no guarantee that the situation at other gates will be better than here. Let me tell you the plan first. If there is anything wrong, you are welcome to correct me." Blake Song's tone was still cold, and the words "welcome to correct me" sounded like purely polite words, and they were said to Clara Zhou.
"Ethan will be in charge of hitting the lamppost with the iron pipe later. The zombies we encounter are sensitive to smell and hearing. They will be attracted by the sound. As long as you don't get too close, their movements will be very slow. But once they get close to a certain distance, they will pounce on us. This distance should be..."
"Three meters." Ethan said firmly, "I've noticed that the safe distance is about three meters. If you get any closer, it will speed up."
Blake Song glanced at him and nodded: "We can lead them in a circle, starting from the westernmost street lamp of Building 31, and knock on each lamppost a few times. Doing so may attract wandering zombies that are not in the dormitory. There is no need to fight, as long as we pass safely. We don't have much time, and we should be able to leave the zombies behind by going around Building 31 in a full circle. Do you understand?"
Glancing at by Blake Song's sharp eyes, the two men were startled and nodded subconsciously.
"Well, Ethan, you run in the front, Clara Zhou, you run in the middle, it's safer this way, I'll cover the rear." Blake Song examined the surrounding terrain, "I'll estimate the distance between us and the zombies, Ethan, you follow my instructions to control your speed, make sure you don't get chased too closely, and don't let the zombies lose their target and stop." As Blake Song spoke, he weighed the kitchen knife in his hand, and he didn't seem to be very satisfied with this weapon. For creatures like zombies, kitchen knives are indeed not as useful as long weapons like iron rods.
"Well...if you don't mind...I'll lend this to you first." Clara Zhou said weakly. Seeing Blake Song looking up at her, she swallowed nervously, "I don't mean anything else, but this one is more useful...Anyway, this one is too heavy for me anyway."
Blake Song looked at her for a few seconds, his eyes moved from her hand holding the shovel to her obviously nervous face, and suddenly smiled: "Thank you, you can use the knife for self-defense."
Clara Zhou took it with both hands with great trepidation.
"By the way, Ethan." Blake Song suddenly called him, which scared the alert Ethan.
"What?"
"Some zombies in front of us may be attracted here later." Blake Song said, "You are at the front, so be careful. If you encounter one, just hit the sphenoid bone, which is relatively fragile and can be killed easily."
"Sphenoid bone?"
"...on the temple."
"okay."
Blake Song looked at the watch on his wrist. It was 20:25: "We can start now."
The clang of iron hitting each other was heard, and Ethan felt his hand holding the water pipe go numb. The zombies at the west gate really began to move towards the source of the sound. Although their movements were still slow, their large numbers gave people a sense of mental oppression.
"run!"
As soon as Blake Song finished speaking, Ethan ran forward without looking back. Clara Zhou was stunned for a moment, and then she ran after him. Because she had no shoes and had fallen, she was limping when she ran.
"Slow down, they can't catch up with you." Blake Song shouted at the end.
Ethan had already run to the next lamp post and looked back at Blake Song and Clara Zhou. Blake Song was still standing there, looking at the zombies. The farthest ones were not clearly visible in the night, but the closest ones were almost within three meters of him. Even under the dim street lights, he could clearly see the ferocious murderous intent on their faces. They were no longer human, even if they had been, but now they were chasing their former kind in this nightmare night, biting, killing, and devouring them mercilessly.
Just one bite can lead to infection.
Although he knew that the safe distance was three meters, it was still not easy to control the urge to run. Ethan knew that Blake Song was brave, but he still broke into a cold sweat for him.
Blake Song calculated in his mind and decisively gave up the idea of luring away all the zombies. He quickly ran to where Ethan and Clara Zhou were.
Clara Zhou's face turned even paler, and her voice trembled: "It's too dangerous. What if they pounce on us? Don't get too close to them!"
"It's okay, just don't get within three meters of them. Now keep knocking." Blake Song gave orders to Ethan while observing the surrounding environment.
The knocking sound of "clang clang" sounded again, and the zombies continued to move towards them. Even a few wandering zombies in front were attracted to them. Ethan held the water pipe tightly in his hand, forcing himself not to run away. Clara Zhou was so nervous that she almost fainted. She was shaking all over and didn't dare to look directly at the wandering zombies in front of her.
The feeling of being attacked from both sides was really bad. Ethan took a deep breath, exerted his strength on his feet and rushed forward. The zombie in front roared and pounced on him - now! Ethan swung the iron rod hard, hitting the zombie's side of the head. The fragile sphenoid bone could not withstand such a heavy blow, and it made a muffled sound of breaking. The real sense of the blow made Ethan's head hot, and he hit it again with his backhand. This time, the position of the temple was sunken directly. The zombie staggered to the ground, moved a few times, and then became quiet.
Ethan breathed a sigh of relief. As long as he found the right place, the zombies were not as difficult to deal with as he had imagined.
But before he could finish celebrating, he heard Blake Song's voice behind him: "Are you an idiot? You can avoid it by walking along the green belt next to it."
Ethan was stunned, looking at a blank expression as if he had done nothing. Clara Zhou looked at him sympathetically, and stepped into the green belt while enduring the pain in her feet.
The next plan went smoothly. After going around most of Building 31, the West Gate was in sight. There were only a few zombies wandering around. Blake Song ran between the two and said, "No need to knock on the lamppost now. Just rush through. If you are stopped by zombies, just dodge them. Don't stop after you pass this gate. Keep running until you reach the clock square."
"Walk!"
At the command, the three of them shook off the zombies behind them and rushed forward quickly. Because of the wind direction, the zombies in front of the west gate did not react until they rushed close to them. Ethan knocked away the zombie closest to him with a stick, and ran out of the gate before looking back. Blake Song held Clara Zhou with one hand and knocked the zombies that rushed to the ground with a shovel in the other hand.
"Be careful!" Ethan could see clearly in front that a zombie standing in the shadow of the communication office was less than three meters away from the two of them!
Clara Zhou looked up in panic, her right hand was held by Blake Song, and her left hand held the kitchen knife. Without thinking, she threw the kitchen knife at the zombie, but it only hit the zombie lightly. Blake Song also noticed the danger here, loosened his grip on Clara Zhou, and slapped the zombie's face with a shovel with both hands, twisting its head.
"Run!" Blake Song once again pulled up Clara Zhou who was standing there, and rushed out of the west gate in a few steps.
The three of them ran all the way to the Clock Square, crossed the bridge over the artificial water system on campus, shook off the endless stream of zombies around them, and ran into the empty Clock Square in one breath.
A strange thing happened. When they ran into the area where the clock square was located, the zombies behind them suddenly seemed to be unable to sense their breath. They stood there in a daze, and their ferocious and hideous faces no longer showed the aggressive expression they had when they found food. Instead, they growled unconsciously and began to wander outside the square.
"It's safe..." Clara Zhou's legs went limp and she fell to her knees on the special shaped tiles in the Clock Square.
Even during the 1000-meter physical test, he had never run so hard. Now that he relaxed, he felt his legs and feet were numb. Ethan bent his waist and supported his knees, panting heavily, his head buzzing.
Blake Song looked at Clara Zhou's bloodstained feet and turned to leave the Clock Square.
"Hey, where are you going?" Lin Juegao shouted.
Blake Song walked to the edge of the square and immediately attracted the attention of the nearest zombie. The zombie growled and moved towards him. Blake Song knocked the zombie over with a shovel without hesitation and chopped off half of its skull with the edge of the shovel. His movements were clean and bloody. Feeling the breath of the living again, the zombies around him slowly gathered together again. However, when he dragged the zombie back to the clock square, the zombie group dispersed again.
Blake Song took off the pair of women's sneakers from the zombie's feet and hooked them on his fingers, one in each hand. He seemed very reluctant to touch them and frowned with disgust.
"Put it on." Blake Song said to Clara Zhou.
Clara Zhou gratefully took the shoes with both hands and put them on her feet.
"Someone arrived earlier than us..." Ethan looked at the clock tower in the center of the Clock Square. There were three people nearby, walking towards them.
