On June 27, the 18th year of the Hongzhi reign, taking advantage of the mourning period for the death of Emperor Hongzhi, the Tatar leader, the little prince, raised an army of more than 10,000 and brazenly attacked Xuanfu on the border.
Unlike in the past, the Tatars came well prepared this time and did not intend to rob and leave. The little prince used his troops wisely and set up camps along the Niuxin Mountain and Hei Liulin area, which was more than 20 miles long and wide.
In the camp, people were shouting and horses were neighing, crossbows and arrows were fully equipped, swords were shining brightly, and it seemed that they were ready for a protracted war.
As no intelligence was received at night, the governor, the chief censor Li Jin, and the general commander, the deputy governor Zhang Jun, both knew that the invaders were not friendly and the situation was critical, but they had a dispute on how to respond.
Li Jin advocated building strong walls and closing the border to defend the enemy. When the Tatars were exhausted after three drum attacks, they could sneak into the camp and raid the stronghold, and then launch a surprise attack to repel the enemy.
