Jade tapped the tabletop with her knuckles, her well-trimmed nails looking delicate and soft in the morning light. She curled her lips into a small arc with a faint smile, "Oh? You saw her when you were a child? What a coincidence?"
Her mood was unusually high. Seeing Jade's interest, Claire wanted to mention it casually, but when she saw Jade finally break free from his melancholy, she tried hard to recall the situation back then and told Jade:
"I was about five or six years old at the time. I went with my parents to visit the home of the person they had chosen for assistance. The little girl was not the age in the photo. She must have been eight or nine years old. However, due to years of malnutrition, she was very short and shriveled, like a seedling that had been drained of water, and looked wilted."
Jade stared at her without blinking. Claire was encouraged by her and tried harder to recall:
"The girl's family was very patriarchal and treated her badly. They didn't allow her to go to school. She had to carry a little boy who looked fatter than she was all day. Her back was bent from the pressure and she almost fell to the ground. After we went there, we talked to the parents about the conditions for a long time. We almost wore out our lips. The family finally agreed to let the girl go to school with financial aid. During the days when they were preparing to take her away to enroll, she often took me to the mountains to play and caught many beautiful butterflies with me."
